AMAZING HISTORY FOR YOU TO EXPLORE

Rock and Pine Adventures provides three-hour guided tours of ancient Native American petroglyphs and pictographs, cavalry campsites and incredible natural wonders in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota.

Prehistoric and historic archaeology, native culture and ancient rock art of the earliest area inhabitants are featured at the “Buffalo Cave” archaeology site. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the petroglyphs carved here on rocky cliffs may date back to as much as 8,000 years ago. Stone teepee rings mark the site of native campsites.

Tours also view the location of the first U.S. Military Fort located within the Black Hills. General George Custer camped in this valley on August 3, 1874 on the southern-most point of his historic expedition into the Black Hills. The Deadwood to Cheyenne stagecoach line traveled through this part of South Dakota in the late 1800s.

Thousands of bison once roamed these prairies. Witness their mark on the land - the amazing “Buffalo Stairs,” where bison hoof prints carved an uphill path in solid stone.

Locally-collected fossils provide evidence that you are in “dinosaur country." Hear how the Black Hills were formed and see some of its geometric land forms. Hear about the wildlife and native vegetation that typifies today's Black Hills.
